The Milky Way

This picture of the Milky Way (our own galaxy) in the vicinity of constellation Scorpius, The Scorpion, looking directly towards the centre of the Galaxy, was taken on Fuji ISO 800 print film with an exposure of approximately 40 seconds. 11 April 2001 11:20UT. You can see the bright moonlight glinting off the observatory dome.

In addition to the Milky Way which is visible (just) from the top left of the picture diagonally down towards the bottom centre, you can see several interesting objects, including mars, Antares, M6 Butterfly Cluster, M7 Ptolemy's Cluster, M8 Lagoon Nebula, M20 Trifid Nebula. Move your mouse over the central area of the picture to find them (only works in MS Explorer I think), or click here for an annotated picture showing the object names.
